HKUEAA - Overseas Study Tour 2024 to Kobe, Japan

We are thrilled to share news about the remarkable success of the HKUEAA Overseas Study Tour 2024 to Japan from 26 May to 31 May with excellent feedback from participants. The tour theme is “A Glimpse into the Livable and Sustainable Future”, in which cutting-edge technologies with a view to achieving a carbon neutral future are explored.

The highlight of the tour is the exploration of hydrogen technologies. We had the precious opportunity to visit the world’s first integrated hydrogen validation facility, namely Takasago Machinery works of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. We were amazed by their state-of-the-art R&D of integrating hydrogen technologies into power generation. We met with the regional and local government representatives as well as Kawasaki Heavy Industries, understanding their strategies for developing a decarbonization region. Moreover, our visit to the Port Island of Kobe was also an eye-opening experience in looking at their hydrogen co-generation demonstration project. Our great time in going up to the tower top of Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, enjoying the breathtaking view over this engineering masterpiece will surely be a long- lasting memory.

Another highlight of the tour is the exploration of sustainability practices of Japan at a global level. We gladly had the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Hyogo International Association (HIA) to introduce and explain to us their collaboration agenda and rationale for sustainable development and a more livable future. We also visited the Tarumi Sewage Treatment Plant integrated with power generation. We gained valuable insights on the implementation of sustainability into our daily lives during these visits.

The Organising Committee would like to thank all participants for being part of this wonderful journey in particular our leader, Vice-President Ir T. K. CHIANG, and Special Advisor Ir Paul POON. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to all the hosts and supporting organisations who made this tour possible. We look forward to your participation in the future tours!
