HKUEAA × HKU Faculty of Engineering: InnoQUEST Kick-off Ceremony
Following the success of InnoQUEST launched with the HKU Faculty of Engineering, we are delighted to announce an enhanced InnoQUEST in partnership with Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD)'s InnoChallenge, a specialized in-house technology and innovation competition, and the E&M Young Ambassador (EMYA) programme, a departmental youth and educational initiative. This initiative provides HKU engineering undergraduate students with hands-on exposure across the full innovation and technology (I&T) project lifecycle, from pitching and co-creation workshops to proof-of-concept trials, bridging government, academia, and the profession.
Ir Raymond POON, President of the HKUEAA, and Prof S. C. WONG, Associate Dean of Engineering (Development and External Relations), officiated at the Enhanced InnoQUEST Kick-off Ceremony on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, at the EMSD Headquarters. In his opening speech, Ir POON shared his people-centric vision: "Engineering is not solely about technology; it is about people, society, and the future we shape together." To the students, he added: "Great engineering is not just about writing code or designing hardware. It is about solving real-world challenges for the community."
With the guidance and support from two Assistant Deans, Prof C.K. CHUI, Assistant Dean (Teaching and Learning - UG) and Dr. Match KO, Assistant Dean (Admissions - UG), nine HKU engineering students, also EMYA members, are embedded within EMSD's active InnoProjects. Coming from Kazakhstan, Taiwan China, the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong China, and India, they bring diverse international, regional, and local perspectives to the programme. Their projects span a wide range of innovative solutions, including the BIM-Robot Platform, an Autonomous Robot for Body Transportation in Mortuary Building, an AI-Driven Underwater Cleaning Robot for Seawater Intakes at District Cooling System (DCS), Humanoid Robot Navigation for Lift Operation & Access Control, AI Flood Prediction & Visualization, and AI Environmental Monitoring. Project teams have already started the project briefing and site demonstrations, holding fruitful in-depth discussions.
A student representative also offered a short sharing on their innovative ideas and study approaches, highlighting how they leverage cutting-edge technologies such as Robotics, Generative AI, and the Internet of Things (IoT) to "QUEST" for "Inno"vative solutions to real-world engineering challenges.
Following the ceremony, Ir Vincent CHOW, Deputy Director/Trading Services, led a guided tour of the Inno Zone, where the HKU guests could experience EMSD's latest I&T showcase.
HKUEAA extends sincere thanks to EMSD, the HKU Faculty of Engineering, and all project teams. We wish all students an engaging, inspiring, and rewarding InnoQUEST experience.
